Navy 'Ikat' Print Lumbar Pillow
This gorgeous pillow cover sports an 'ikat' print and minimalistic Kantha embroidery. A specialty of West Bengal, India Kantha technique typically uses the classic running stitch to create a simple yet eye-catching design. The navy is beautifully contrasted with the red threads and piping. It also features a concealed zip closure at the back for convenience.
Today, the 500-year-old craft has gained a new dimension after finding its place in home furnishings. In many Indonesian languages, Ikat means to 'tie' or 'bind.' This technique is more complex than traditional tie-and-dye because it employs ‘resist dyeing’ the yarns prior to the weaving process. Individual yarns or bundles of yarns are tightly wrapped together to obtain the desired patterns. The bindings can be altered to create an alternate new pattern. The 'blurriness' in the design, lends a unique aesthetic to ikat.
